Voter applicants who attempt “multiple” registration risk jail time.
On Friday, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) issued a warning to eligible voters not to purposefully register more than once under a penalty of up to six years in prison.
We use the Automated Fingerprint Identification System, or AFIS, to determine whether a voter has previously registered or is a double registrant. We will remove the registration, but we could also be charged with electoral fraud at the same time. Infringers face prison sentences of one to six years, according to poll body chief George Erwin Garcia.
The warning was sent because dishonest registrants might try to take advantage of the current nationwide voter registration drive.
In addition to the Comelec field offices, a number of locations in shopping centers and government buildings have been set up for the listing, which began on December 12 and will last through January 31.
Garcia, on the other hand, stated in an interview that they will soon begin bringing legal action against people who had already been discovered registering more than once.
He stated that the process through which this action would be taken is now being finalized by the Commission en banc.
He also extended an invitation to all eligible Filipinos to register and cast their ballots in the upcoming elections.
I hope you visit the registration booths we have set up at each Comelec office. We have satellite registration in the malls as well as sites for our Registration Anywhere Project, where you may also register, according to the Comelec director.
