In the first three weeks of January, DOH-8 reports an increase in dengue cases.

The Eastern Visayas Department of Health (DOH) has noted an increase in dengue fever cases in the first three weeks of 2023 and issued a warning that the region’s frequent, heavy rains may lead to an increase in cases in the next weeks.

The region has already seen 210 dengue cases in the first three weeks of the year, which is 19% more than the 176 instances during the same period in 2022.

According to DOH, 190 people, or roughly 90% of the cases, had severe illnesses and were hospitalized.

This pattern is anticipated to continue given the persistent torrential rains that have affected the Eastern Visayas region over the first three weeks of 2023 as a result of the northeast monsoon, shear line, and low-pressure system.

Eastern Visayas saw a total of 6,794 dengue cases with 20 fatalities in 2022. In comparison to the 877 cases recorded in 2021 with no deaths, this represents a significant 774 percent increase.

The DOH asked the public and local government entities to abide by steps to lessen the spike in dengue cases and deaths this year as a result of the high number of dengue cases since last year.

One of them is to examine containers or water deposits for Aedes mosquito larvae and pupae (known locally as kiti-kiti). To clean these containers, drain any water from dry regions to quickly kill larvae and pupae. You should also wash the container’s walls with soap and water to get rid of any mosquito eggs. When not in use, cover the containers.

In order to lower the risk of dengue transmission and raise awareness, the DOH also urges the activation of the dengue brigade in communities and the planning of a weekly simultaneous seek-and-destroy action.

People with dengue symptoms such as abdominal pain, bleeding, frequent vomiting, tiredness, or restlessness are urged to get in touch with a doctor as away.

In addition to financial help, local governments are urged to support policies through disaster risk reduction and management plans for health, among other avenues.

“The DOH is optimistic that the region will be able to arrest the present trends in dengue cases early in the year through the religious following of these rules,” the DOH stated.

A quick spike in temperature, a terrible headache, and pain in the muscles, joints, and area behind the eyes are all symptoms of dengue fever.

Rashes and variable degrees of bleeding in various body areas are potential side effects for some.

The health agency requested that mayors of cities and towns frequently plan cleanliness efforts that would target eliminating mosquito breeding grounds in their communities.
