According to a recent report, European countries continue to have a high incidence of medication shortages, which have a worsening onerous effect on patients.

A poll was undertaken by the Pharmaceutical Group of the European Union (PGEU) with pharmacies in 29 nations, including EU members as well as Turkey, Norway, and North Macedonia.

The survey’s findings revealed that, compared to the previous year, the shortages of medicines in the majority of European nations had deteriorated.

Twenty percent of these nations reported 200–300 drug shortages, while a quarter of these countries have more than 600 drugs in short supply.

According to three-quarters of the nations, this winter’s shortages were worse than they were a year earlier.

The poll also revealed that the most challenging medications to find in pharmacies across Europe were paracetamol in syrup form, various blood pressure medications, and antibiotics from the amoxicillin group used to treat respiratory tract infections.

Drug abuse is a problem since there is a lack of supply despite an increase in demand.

This season, seasonal diseases, particularly influenza and the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), began earlier and proceeded more severely than usual in European nations.

According to experts, Covid-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) lockdowns are linked to weakened immune systems because people were not exposed to certain viruses during this time.

With the European energy crisis and growing raw material prices having an impact on production, pharmaceutical producers are also unprepared for the increased demand in the face of rising illnesses.
