Frost-covered crops and flowers in Benguet are seen to draw travelers.

On Wednesday, a local official stated that they anticipate visitors to Atok town to return for the frost phenomenon as well as its flower and vegetable farms.

According to Cherry Sano, municipal agriculture officer of Atok, Benguet, “Naging destination na ang Atok (Atok has become a destination) with the gorgeous flowers, vegetable farms, and the extremely cold temperature that generates frost.”

Visitors to Sakura Park and the Northern Blossoms flower gardens have recently taken a liking to Atok. Atok’s Paoay barangay is renowned for its abundant calla lily flowering grasslands and vegetable fields.

“Every year starting in November, we start getting questions about frost from daring individuals who come early to capture pictures of the frosted plants. There are no other locations in the country where it is found, thus “Sano threw in.

However, farmers fear the phenomenon while tourists marvel at frost-covered foliage. According to Sano, the town had its worst “andap,” or frost, in 2008, which resulted in extensive coverage from both local and national media.

Sano claimed that farmers have been using cultural management techniques to guard against plant damage from frost.

For the frost to melt and to prevent leaves from being scorched by the morning sun’s rays, farmers water plants before daybreak, she continued.

Fortunately, she continued, farmers have learned how to mitigate its impacts, so the frost occurrence in the town only causes little crop damage.

According to Sano, only three farmers from the town were affected by the lone instance of frost so far this year, which was noted on January 26.

Although the three farmers were able to preserve some tubers and sell them, the official claimed that the damage was primarily to potatoes.
