Farmers in Nueva Ecija will use crop technology as part of a mechanization scheme
The Nueva Ecija Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (RCEF) mechanization initiative will see the adoption of crop establishment technologies by a total of 15 farmer cooperatives and organizations (FCAs).
After seeing first-hand technology demonstrations of various farm types of machinery, Joel V. Dator, director for operations at the Department of Agriculture-Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization (DA-PhilMech), reported on Thursday that FCAs had expressed interest in adopting the crop establishment technologies.
Dator claimed that despite being RCEF mechanization program recipients already, the 15 FCAs had not yet utilized agricultural establishing methods.
He mentioned that the DA-PhilMech demonstrated several planting settings for both the riding-type and walk-behind mechanical transplanters during the demonstration.
According to a statement from Dator, “They are willing to go through training and apply the technology on the next cropping season.”
In an effort to enhance the adoption and utilization rate of crop establishment technologies among the farmers’ cooperative and association beneficiaries of the program, the DA-PhilMech has been running a campaign dubbed “Makinaryang Pantanim: Push Na ‘Yan sa Palayan.”
The agricultural establishment methods have a very low seven-hectare per season utilization rate, according to a DA-PhilMech survey.
According to DA-PhilMech, the machines’ limited popularity can be due to a lack of appropriate knowledge on and regarding their use, which presents difficulties with seedling preparation, problems with broad seedling spacing, and other issues.
Experienced farmers who had used crop establishment technology were encouraged to share their personal and successful experiences in order to address these problems, according to Dator.
