The Pandan Festival will increase tourism in Pangasinan.
By planning, events for the pandan festival, including a cook fest, a dancing competition, a triathlon, and the opening of a pasalubong (souvenir) center, the local government unit in this area hopes to increase tourism.
The event, which will take place from March 18 to 25, is anticipated to draw more visitors this year due to the relaxation of crowd control restrictions, according to an interview with Mayor Karl Christian Vega on Tuesday.
The Dulang Pandan or Pandan Cookfest, which will include several cuisines that use pandan (screwpine) leaves as an ingredient, is one of the festival’s highlights, according to him.
The Parada na Dayew, or the Grand Street Dance Competition, between the barangays, is another highlight.
He stated, “Our dancers have previously participated in competitions at various festivals around the nation, including the Panagbenga Festival in Baguio City.
Vega added that the opening program for the Pasalubong Center and the Negosyo Center will both take place on March 16 in conjunction with the Department of Commerce and Industry’s support.
At the Pasalubong Center, “both tourists and locals will be able to purchase various pandan items and other products of the area,” he stated.
Bags, baskets, planters, and many other items are manufactured from pandan leaves.
The push to persuade more farmers to cultivate pandan in their municipality has been stepped up, according to Vega, because there is still a great demand for the leaves.
The name of the town comes from the pandan plant, which has a long history of growing well in the region.
He added that they are also promoting “clean and green surroundings” and were giving the 15 barangays more pandan seedlings to grow alongside the vegetables in their communal garden.
The Biskeg-Peles Mapandan Triathlon, one of the sporting events the town is promoting alongside cycling and even water sports, is another highlight of the festival.
We were fortunate to receive funding for a slope protection project, he added, adding that it will further enhance our river system (for water sports).
To urge Filipino expatriates to honor their hometown, the festival also features the Mutya ng Mapandan, which features 15 candidates from various barangays, the Alumni Night, the Balikbayan Night, and the Zarzuela, among other events.
