In the first two months of the year, there were approximately 2,000 cases of human trafficking, which is almost as many as there were in all of 2022.

According to Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla, victims of trafficking in Filipinos are typically brought to Myanmar via Thailand before becoming impossible to rescue after they have reached rebel-occupied territories.

At an inter-agency conference at Malacanang Palace in Manila, Remulla told reporters, “It is disturbing, extremely alarming.

He stated that the agencies engaged will concentrate on Southeast Asian nations.

“This is what we term modern-day slavery. Mag-iingat kaya nga sana ang Pilipino. There is a list that should be followed if you plan to travel abroad, therefore Filipinos should exercise caution. Before traveling abroad, we should make a checklist “He said.

Remulla claimed that the epidemic, which compelled Filipinos to seek cash through any means, may have made matters worse.

“Numerous opportunities exist. When a Filipino travels abroad, there is difficulty because sobra más mabuti lagi. As people travel abroad, there are those who are looking for better chances. The issue is that Filipinos believe traveling abroad is always preferable, yet when they do, they are no longer protected “explained he.

Republic Act 9208, also known as the Anti-Trafficking in People Act, must be coordinated and monitored by the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT), with the DOJ serving as the lead agency.

The IACAT works on numerous projects that aim to eradicate human trafficking, prevent it from happening in the first place, protect and rehabilitate victims, and bring traffickers to justice.
