LTO: A recommended cap on driving school costs to be released soon
A standard driving school rate that would be fair and affordable for both driving schools and student drivers is something that the Land Transportation Office (LTO) is about to put the finishing touches on.
Assistant Secretary Jose Arturo “Jay Art” Tugade, the head of the LTO, stated in a Laging Handa briefing on Thursday that the standard rate’s final draught was considered at a consultative meeting with the committee on driving schools on Wednesday.
The standard fee was developed after taking into account a number of variables, including the cost of investment and running expenses for driving schools, the minimum salary, rent, and electricity rates in various regions of the nation.
It is “pasada” and “ilalabas na po natin iyong ceiling na puwede pong i-charge ng mga driving schools sa mga interesados pong mag-apply for a student driver permit” (We just need to go over this one last time and then we’ll release the ceiling that driving schools may charge those applying for a student permit), Tugade said.
He gave the people his word that the LTO’s implementation of its rules would be transparent and accountable.
Tugade stated that the action would help to encourage driver discipline and road safety.
Additionally, he exhorted driving schools to adhere to the LTO’s requirements and guidelines.
In accordance with Republic Act 10930, applicants for driver’s licenses must first pass the Theoretical Driving Course (TDC) and Practical Driving Course (PDC) from a driving school that has earned LTO accreditation.
Presently, a student permit costs PHP250, while a driver’s license costs PHP685.
But, the overall cost, which includes the cost of a driving school course, maybe as much as PHP8,000 to PHP10,000, which has alarmed many candidates.
Rep. Anna York Bondoc of Pampanga responded by filing House Resolution No. 751, which demanded an investigation into the skyrocketing cost of getting a driver’s license.
