DSWD extends the oil spill victims’ cash-for-work program

The cash-for-work program for the victims of an oil spill brought on by the MT Princess Empress, which sank on February 8 off the coast of Mindoro Oriental, has been extended by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

The distribution of family food packs and cash assistance through the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) program will continue until May, according to DSWD Assistant Bureau Director Miramel Laxa, who was speaking at a Laging Handa public briefing on Monday. This is because fishermen are still not allowed to fish, she said.

As a result, “Only one representative from each affected family may participate here in our cash-for-work programme so that more may avail assistance through the project,” says the statement. “Puwedeng makilahok po ang ating cash for work programa ay isang representative ng isang pamilya para nga po as much as possible, ay mas marami ang ating mga matutulungan sa pamamagitan ng said Laxa

According to the DSWD, the oil spill has already had an impact on 32,661 families, or 151,463 people, mostly in Mindoro, Palawan, and Antique.

According to Laxa, 131 barangays in the impacted provinces are currently receiving assistance from the DSWD and partner local government units (LGUs).

She explained that it was in response to the worry of the impacted people and their families, who were reliant on these funds for their daily needs.

As part of the pay-for-work initiative, the DSWD has so far given PHP116 million in cash to the 19,762 impacted people.

According to her, participants in the cash-for-work programs are largely responsible for using locally accessible materials to create improvised booms and oil spill absorbents in order to help limit the oil spill issue.

She claimed that as an additional source of income, program participants are also expected to participate in neighborhood cleanliness efforts and backyard gardening.
