During Holy Week, up to 140K travelers per day are anticipated at NAIA.

During Holy Week, the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) is anticipated to receive 140,000 extra passengers each day, up from the current 120,000, according to a government official on Tuesday.

Since this is the first Holy Week with open domestic and international borders since 2020, Bryan Co, senior assistant general manager of the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), stated in a public briefing that many people would want to take advantage of the holidays.

According to Co, the spike in travelers is anticipated to continue through May until the conclusion of the hot, dry season.

“Our situation is almost pre-pandemic. At the NAIA, we processed almost 48 million passengers annually in 2019. We had about 31 million passengers last year, and we anticipate between 41 and 43 million this year. The seven million travelers we had at the NAIA in 2021 have increased significantly, he added.

Co claimed that MIAA has sufficient staff and works closely with the airlines and other organizations present at the NAIA to manage the lines and prevent delays.

The installation of more closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras will enable management to see clearly into the processing sections and regions of congestion.

Since recordings are simple to check and can be used as proof of dishonest behavior, there are plans to install more CCTV devices to address potential situations or complaints.

Prior to an international journey, Co encouraged customers to allow three to four hours, and two hours prior to a domestic flight.

In order to avoid standing in line, travelers should also take into account the traffic on the route to the airport and use the online travel tax payment system.

The airport terminals will all have help desks where travelers can voice their concerns, he said.

Congestion control

Co stated that beginning July 1, Terminal 2 will only be used for domestic flights as part of ongoing efforts to reduce traffic at the NAIA.

Immigration agents stationed at Terminal 2 might subsequently increase the staffing levels at Terminals 1 and 3, which will both serve foreign aircraft.

By June 16, all international flights operated by Philippine Airlines (PAL) will be moved to Terminal 1.

The only airline currently using Terminal 2 for both domestic and international flights is PAL.

Since December 2022, its flights to and from the United States, Canada, and the Middle East have been redirected to Terminal 1.

“By doing this, we are improving the efficiency of the terminal design and will increase the capacity of Terminal 2 by 20 to 25% since this will be exclusively used for domestic flights,” he said.
