Binay advises water consumers to start conserving water and to be sensible.
In light of the impending water crisis, a congressman on Monday urged water users to use water more wisely and emphasized the importance of being ready for El Nino.
“The water situation brought on by El Nino is isyu for everyone, po. El Nino and the water crisis are challenges that affect us all, but they are not ones that can be addressed by any one sector, institution, organization, or company alone. Everyone should be prepared since we are a part of the answer, not just one sector, institution, agency, or enterprise,” Senator Nancy Binay said in a statement.
Binay emphasized the need for Filipinos to avoid being shocked by El Nino every time it affects the nation.
“Our appeal to our fellow consumers is to start conserving water and encourage our housemates to be practical in using water,” she said.
Additionally, the member requested that the National Water Resources Board (NWRB) brief the Senate on its preparations and the application of current water legislation.
It would be very appreciated if the NWRB shared its all-encompassing water resource plan, as well as its water allocation and reuse policy, with the LGUs so that it could be put into practice at the local level, Binay said.
“Ilang rainwater collection system na ba sa mahigit 42,000 barangay sa buong bansa ang nagawa o ginagawa ng gobyerno? Sino ang in-charge sa maintenance?” gusto rin natin malaman na mula nang maisabatas ang Republic Act (RA) 6716 noong 1989? Ilan dito ang sira na, ang kailangan i-rehabilitate o ilan na lang ang gumagana (We also want to know how many rainwater collection systems were constructed in 42,000 barangays across the nation since RA 6716 was put into law in 1989 and who is in-charge in the maintenance? How many need rehabilitation and how many are still functioning?,” she continued.
Joel Villanueva, the majority leader in the Senate, praised President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for appointing a Water Management Resource Office (WMRO) to deal with a potential water crisis.
In a second statement, Villanueva said: “Through this EO, problems with the nation’s water supply will be given more attention. Sa pamamagitan ng EO na ito, mas mabibigyan ng pansin ang mga problema pagdating sa suplay ng tubig sa bansa.”
Villanueva filed Senate Bill No. 2013, together with a number of other senators, to establish a Department of Water Resources and Water Regulatory Commission.
He also mentioned that the National Water Act requires the development of an integrated framework for managing water that will set forth specific preparations for handling a water crisis.
Villanueva recently filed Senate Resolution No. 561 to enquire what the steps responsible government agencies are taking to prevent a potential water crisis in Metro Manila and other impacted areas of the nation.
