For Lent and the summer holiday, some 78K police officers will be on duty, according to the PNP

According to Philippine National Police (PNP) head Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr., about 78,000 police personnel have been stationed across the nation to ensure that drivers and commuters are safe during Lent and the summer months.

This coincides with the beginning of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan on March 23 and the Catholic celebration of Holy Week from April 2 to April 9.

For the 60-day summer holiday season, Azurin has published operational guidelines for police regional and provincial offices to put their separate law enforcement and public safety plans into action.

“We want to ensure that the many travelers who will be passing through at this time will have a safe and pleasurable experience. In order to discourage crime, avert accidents, and reduce unneeded discomfort, we ask the public to work with us and abide by the rules and regulations established by the government.

Through the construction of Assistance Hubs (AHs) and Police Assistance Desks, Azurin instructed police units to assist the public and immediately address individual issues. (PADs).

An additional 39,504 officers will be deployed to specified locations of convergence, such as main thoroughfares, transit hubs, ports, commercial areas, and places of worship. A total of 38,387 officers will be deployed for increased police presence through mobile and foot/beat patrol.

The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), with a total of 9,585 police officers, will have the most deployments, he continued.

Police officers are prepared to be deployed in the region’s streets and key infrastructure, according to Maj. Gen. Edgar Alan Okubo, director of the NCRPO, to carry out anti-criminality operations, target hardening measures, traffic management/direction and control, and other related police public safety services.

The police force will be felt by the public in transportation hubs, places of worship, malls, markets, commercial areas, and parks throughout Metro Manila as a result of the various events being observed during the summer vacation (SumVac) months, such as Philippine Veterans Week, Araw ng Kagitingan, Lenten season, Labor Day, and Flores De Mayo.

The deployment has been set to a total of 7,738 security forces, including Metro Manila Development Authority, Philippine Coast Guard, Bureau of Fire Protection, Special Action Force, Regional Highway Patrol Unit, Regional Maritime Unit, and Aviation Security Group, according to Okubo. The NCRPO also coordinated with other government agencies for additional support personnel.

In order for the community to have a tranquil and relaxing summer break, the NCRPO chief pleaded with the general public to assist and support its anti-criminality efforts.

Okubo issued a public warning, urging people to be on the lookout and use the NCRPO text hotline numbers 0999-901-8181 or 0915-888-9181 to report any suspicious activity to the police.

While this is going on, Azurin claimed that the nation’s peace and order indicators are continuing to decline this month, particularly index crimes, which fell by 16.11 percent from 9,375 from January to March 25, 2022, to 7,865 from the same period this year.

Police units continue their interdiction operations against major drug traffickers, low-level drug dealers, and marijuana farms as part of the anti-illegal drugs campaign, and as a result, a huge haul of illicit substances worth more than PHP1.36 billion has been seized.

Between January 1 and March 25, 2023, proceedings were brought against 14,481 drug offenders who had been arrested.

Azurin added that from January 1 to March 24, 6,726 firearms were recovered and 1,993 people were arrested as a result of the persistent nationwide operations against stray firearms.

Additionally, within the same time frame, police activities resulted in the arrest of 17,418 people who were wanted.
