Senior government representatives from the nations that make up the Uniting for Consensus Group (UfC) met on Monday in Rome to talk about “meaningful reform” of the UN Security Council.

According to a joint statement by the group released by the Italian Foreign Ministry, officials from the 12 UfC member states — Argentina, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Italy, Malta, Mexico, Pakistan, the Republic of Korea, the Republic of San Marino, Spain, and Türkiye — met to discuss the matter.

The Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI), a think tank for international relations in Italy, and the Italian Association for the United Nations (UNA Italy) organized the gathering to advance a Security Council that is more democratic, accountable, transparent, and effective.

“Real reform of the Security Council is required in view of ongoing crises and the growth in hostilities… We require a Security Council that effectively fulfills its purpose now more than ever, according to the ministry.

The restructuring of the council is “urgently needed,” according to the statement.

The UfC, which consists of 12 nations, is in favor of adding more non-permanent seats because the council “no longer represents the world dynamics where 142 new members have joined the organization since its founding in 1945.”

“The proposal enhances equitable geographical distribution in the Council by adding newly elected seats for regional groups including Africa, the Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and the Caribbean, Eastern Europe, and Small Island Developing States (SIDS),” it noted.

The UfC nations reaffirmed their dedication to cooperating to “achieve a meaningful reform and adapt the Security Council to the constantly changing challenges of the 21st century,” according to the statement.
