If the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO) are completely outlawed, the national government should have a strategy in place for Filipino employees, a congressman stated on Tuesday.

Senator Christopher Go said that before making a judgment, the executive department, which has the “final say” on the matter, should also carefully consider it.

Go told reporters during his visit to fire victims in Binondo, Manila, “If ever we decide to ban this in the future, we should also look at how we can give jobs to workers who will be displaced.”

He continued, “Let’s give them enough time to look for another job because we don’t want Filipino workers to go hungry. Bigyan natin sila ng sapat na panahon na kung paano sila magkaroon ng hanapbuhay.”

Go made the remarks as Senator Sherwin Gatchalian pushed for a complete ban on POGO due to the fact that the hazards outweighed the advantages.

Gatchalian, who serves as the committee’s chair for Ways and Means, declared he would present a draught resolution requesting that all POGO operations be immediately suspended.

According to him, the resolution will recommend that the Bureau of Internal Revenue collect any unpaid taxes owed by POGO licensees, service providers, and third-party auditors; the Department of Labor and Employment help affected Filipino POGO workers find alternative employment; and the cancellation of working visas and alien employment permits issued to foreign POGO workers in order to facilitate their deportation.

Gatchalian urged local government units (LGUs) where POGOs are present on Tuesday to take a position on the phaseout’s proposed implementation.

“Once a crime occurs within your jurisdiction, the mayor and the neighborhood chief of police are responsible. As a result, it becomes a neighborhood concern, he said, citing Pasig City as the first LGU to implement an ordinance outlawing POGO.
