Negros Occidental farm is a facility for producing hybrid coconut seeds.
As part of the implementation of the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan-Coconut Hybridization Project in Western Visayas, a site for on-farm coconut hybridization has been built in Manapla, Negros Occidental.
According to a study released by the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) on Thursday, Jose Gerardo Francisco III’s Manapla Hybrid Seednut Production Facility in Barangay Purisima is one of only three sites in Region 6.
PCA Administrator Bernie Cruz, who oversaw the project’s March 28 inauguration, said, “I would like to congratulate and thank Mr. Francisco and his family for allowing us to utilize their farm for our initiative to hasten the replanting and propagation of the hybrid seeds.
The process of hybridizing coconuts involves mating two genetically distinct individuals to produce a third individual with a new, frequently desirable, set of features.
For distribution to farmers and other participants in the coconut sector, the PCA plans to mass-produce single cross, premium coconut hybrids through this project while adhering to accepted hybridization procedures and best agricultural practices.
As a receiver of technical support from the PCA-6 and the Zamboanga Research Center Plant Genetics Resources Conservation and Utilization Division since 2015, the Francisco family farm has been chosen as a hybridization site.
“We’ll work hard to see that this endeavor is a success. We appreciate PCA’s continued support over the years, Francisco stated.
The hybridization effort, according to PCA-6 Regional Manager Neil Melencion, intends to improve coconut production from “one ton per hectare per year to four to six tons per hectare per year” and generate high-quality seed nuts.
The quality of the seedlings that will be utilized to develop a plantation is “the key to the future of the coconut business,” he continued.
The PCA and the Department of Agriculture were praised by Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson for selecting Negros Occidental to participate in the Coconut Hybridization Program.
“It is essential that the coconut business be modernized. The Hybrid Seednut Production Center’s opening is smart and timely, he continued.
