If Taiwan’s president and the US Speaker meet, China threatens “countermeasures.”

In case any meeting between Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen and US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy “undermines peace across Taiwan Strait,” China warned on Wednesday that it would take “countermeasures.”

Tsai departed from Taipei on Wednesday for a 10-day journey through Central America.

If Tsai gets in touch with Speaker of the US House Kevin McCarthy, it “will be another provocation that seriously violates the one-China principle and undermines China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait,” according to Zhu Fenglian, spokeswoman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council.

According to a press conference transcript, Zhu stated that China “firmly opposes Tsai Ing-planned wen’s ‘transit’ visit to the US.

She said that China will “take decisive steps” in response to such an occurrence.

Tsai remarked at Taoyuan International Airport in Taipei, “With this tour, I will show my gratitude to diplomatic partners for their support of Taiwan.”

According to reports, after McCarthy returns from Guatemala and Belize at the conclusion of her tour, the president of the island country may visit her in California.

Tsai’s first stopover will be in New York before she continues on to Central America.

The US side is urged to strictly abide by the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communique, and take concrete actions to fulfill the solemn commitment of not supporting “Taiwan independence,” according to Zhu, who was quoted by Chinese public broadcaster CGTN. “The ‘transit’ by the Taiwan leader is essentially a provocative act of relying on the United States to seek independence,'” Zhu said.

Taiwan insists on its independence since 1949, but Beijing views it as a “breakaway province.”

Any official communication between Washington and Taiwan has been fiercely resisted by Beijing.

Taipei’s “problems”

The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Wednesday condemned Taiwan President Tsai Ing-“transit” wen’s via the US on her way to Central America and accused the US of “provoking” difficulties by “helping secessionists.”

According to Mao Ning, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, “the true goal of the regional head of Taiwan’s transit in the US is to campaign for “Taiwan independence.”

Mao was in response to the 10-day tour to Central America beginning on Wednesday by the president of Taiwan.

“Mistakes from the past cannot justify ones made now. According to the Chinese daily Global Times, Mao stated that the US conspires with and encourages secessionists to cause trouble, not China, which is overreacting.

The official from China, who was referring to Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party, stated that China “firmly opposes any form of official contact between the US and Taiwan, opposes the transit of Taiwan regional leader in the US under any pretext or justification, and opposes any form of contact between the US and DPP authorities, which violates the one-China principle.”

To “show Taiwan’s willingness to strengthen relations with its Central American partners,” Tsai told reporters, her trip is intended to do just that.

More collaboration with Taiwan’s allies and partners in the fields of agriculture, public health, women’s empowerment, the digital economy, and supply chain security would also be investigated by her team, she added.

After Nancy Pelosi’s secret visit to Taiwan in August of last year, China responded in a way never before seen, launching military activities surrounding Taiwan, an island republic with a population of around 24 million people located in southern mainland China.

As the Covid-19 pandemic had caused border closures, China sent 16 aircraft and four warships around Taiwan on Wednesday as Tsai left for her first international trip in three years.

In recent years, the US has provided Taiwan with arms and equipment worth billions of dollars.
