PNP launches summer security initiative

To safeguard the safety of drivers and commuters during the next Lenten season and summer months, the Philippine National Police (PNP) on Friday formally launched its “Oplan Ligtas Sumvac (summer vacation) 2023” campaign nationwide.

General Rodolfo Azurin Jr., head of the Philippine National Police (PNP), stated in a press release that he has already directed all regional and provincial police agencies to activate their contingency plans and maximize the deployment of personnel through tourist police units in their respective areas of responsibility in coordination with local government units (LGUs), local tourism councils, and the Department of Tourism (DOT).

“We want to ensure that they have a safe and good trip because we anticipate a lot of people traveling, especially during Holy Week, he said.

In order to kick off the campaign, the PNP has issued a set of operational guidelines for police stations and units that aims to create a secure and tranquil environment for individuals traveling to their respective provinces or tourist destinations to observe Holy Week and celebrate local fiestas and other important events.

Also, checkpoint activities will be stepped up to ensure the security and safety of every commuter.

To ensure maximum police presence in crowded areas like bus terminals, seaports, airports, and other transportation hubs, all police regional offices were also given the go-ahead to undertake routine inspections and mobile patrols.

A total of 38,387 policemen from Assistance Hubs (AHs) and Police Assistance Desks (PADs) will be deployed for increased police presence through mobile and foot/beat patrol in order to help the people and quickly handle particular complaints.

For specific locations of confluence, including major thoroughfares, transportation hubs, terminals, commercial districts, and houses of worship, an extra 39,504 officers will be deployed.

In order to prevent or reduce the likelihood of unfavorable situations, Azurin further asked all local police to improve their coordination with their individual LGUs, other law enforcement organizations, private security companies, and other force multipliers.

Additionally, for the continuous implementation of minimal public health requirements related to the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic, the operational guidelines also urged coordination with the managers/owners of resorts, beaches, and other facilities.

The PNP will step up its battle against illegal drugs, gambling, and other criminal activity throughout the full-time frame.

Also, it will keep putting its Oplan Sita, which aims to lessen street crime, into action.

Azurin, in the meantime, urged everyone to exercise caution and report any suspicious behavior to the police.

In order to prevent crimes from happening, he stated, “We call on the people to cooperate with us and respect the norms and regulations imposed by the government.” “We would want to reiterate that everyone’s safety should come first. Let’s collaborate to make this entire summer break safe and worthwhile.
