PH closely monitors escalating tensions in the Taiwan Strait

China has concluded its three-day war games surrounding Taiwan, but the Philippines is still keeping an eye on events regarding the rising tensions in the Taiwan Strait, the nation’s top diplomat said on Tuesday.

Enrique Manalo, the secretary of foreign affairs, claimed during a forum at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) on Tuesday that a conflict would be disastrous, especially for the Philippines given its proximity to the island.

The senior diplomat reaffirmed that the over 100,000 Filipinos employed in Taiwan are at risk from any increase in hostilities, particularly a military clash.

Any rise in tensions or, worse yet, a fight of any type, particularly a military clash, he warned, “would have tremendously negative ramifications on the Philippines.”

Manalo continued by urging all sides to have a discourse.

After Taiwan President Tsai Ing-trip wen’s to the United States, Beijing dispatched warships and fighter jets to conduct military drills in the vicinity of Taiwan over the weekend.

The war drills are intended to issue a “stern warning to the provocative operations of Taiwan independence separatist groups and their cooperation with external forces,” according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Any official interaction between the US and Taiwan is fiercely opposed by China, which views Taiwan as a renegade province.

Similar to the US, the Philippines upholds the one-China concept and acknowledges the People’s Republic of China as the legitimate government of China.

Although there are no diplomatic relations between the US and Taipei, the US nonetheless has a “strong unofficial connection” with the territory and provides “defense goods and services necessary to maintain Taiwan’s adequate self-defense capabilities.”

Washington, DC continues to have the “ability to reject any use of force or other types of coercion that might undermine the security, or the social or economic system, of Taiwan,” according to the State Department.

When asked about limits and if US weapons may be placed in the recently discovered Expanded Defense Cooperation Agreement facilities at the CSIS event, Manalo delayed.

According to him, the US and Filipino parties must consult and approve of all activity within any of the sites.
