Implementing precautions and surveillance against the H3N8 avian flu: DOH
Together with the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the Department of Health (DOH) announced on Wednesday that it is taking preventive action against the H3N8 avian flu.
This came after the first confirmed case of the avian influenza virus, which killed a woman in China.
The woman was 56 years old and hailed from Guangdong, a province in the south.
She was the third individual known to have contracted the H3N8 avian influenza since last year, according to the World Health Organization.
In a media forum, DOH Officer in Charge Maria Rosario Vergeire stated, “As of right now, we haven’t registered any cases or anyone with symptoms here in the Philippines.
She said that the DOH, DA, and DENR have stepped up monitoring, surveillance, and preventive actions to stave off any avian influenza infections.
“Especially among our poultry workers where they use the proper na personal protective equipment (where they wear the proper personal protective equipment),” she said.
According to Vergeire, the DA and DENR are keeping an eye on poultry and wild birds, respectively, to track any potential flu strain transmission from birds to people.
Even in the Philippines, this transmission from avians to humans is still quite rare. According to our conversations, the likelihood that humans will contract this virus is “really low,” she stated.
