Farmers growing seaweed in Surigao Sur benefit from a government scheme.
Farmers of seaweed are now benefiting from government assistance thanks to the Department of Agriculture-Philippine Rural Development Project (DA-PRDP) in the Surigao del Sur hamlet of Hinatuan.
Members of the Barangay Loyola, Hinatuan-based People Unite to Guard Aqua Marine Wealth, Inc. (PUGAW, Inc.), a people’s organization, are among those that profited from the project.
Before the government’s participation, the PUGAW board of directors’ ambition to enhance seaweed production was hampered by a lack of access to necessary supplies, according to Raynita Solomon.
“The DA-PRDP provided additional materials for our production. Seaweed growers in PUGAW have benefited more as a result of their actions, Solomon said in a statement on Wednesday.
She claimed that the project had given her family more money through the sale of seaweed, which has helped the project succeed.
When PUGAW, Inc. obtained 45 cultivating lines in December 2022, the DA-PRDP began to assist the company.
The organization also received tools and inputs from the DA-PRDP in the form of propagules, polyethylene ropes, soft ties, and financial support for PHP1.1 million in addition to the cultivating lines.
According to PUGAW manager Bonifacio Bughao, “Seaweed farming before could not support the needs of our families, but with the support of the DA-PRDP, we were able to increase our production and sustain the demand for seaweeds in the market.”
He said that in the past, the group could only generate an annual income of about PHP73,000.
But with the help of the DA-PRDP, we were able to boost the amount of money we made from growing seaweed. Our revenues reached PHP553,450 in February 2023 alone, according to Bughao.
In order to help the group transport their raw, dried seaweeds, the DA-PRDP also gave them further support for PHP10.5 million in the form of heavy-duty weighing scales, a refractometer, and a three-wheel cargo vehicle.
DA-13, on the other hand, claimed that the company is also looking for fresh prospects for growth.
According to the agency, “they start looking into the possibilities of seaweed value-adding processes, including the raw dried seaweeds into seaweed noodles, crackers, and cakes.”
