DOST chooses Camiguin as the test site for their proposal for a volcanic eruption

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has selected this province as a test location for the creation of a volcanic eruption contingency plan.

DOST Sec. Renato Solidum Jr. said having a thorough plan is essential because volcanic eruptions, unlike other types of disasters, have serious ramifications for health, economics, and public policies. The five-day program began on Wednesday.

“We must be ready for it; the first thing we should plan is to know the risk and hazard; second, monitor and forecast; and finally, know when to warn and inform the public about the hazards,” said Solidum.

As an island province built by volcanic eruptions and home to seven volcanoes, including the still-active Mt. Hibok-Hibok, Solidum claimed the agency chose Camiguin as a model for a national contingency plan.

According to Solidum, a former director at the DOST-affiliated Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Mt. Hibok-Hibok last erupted between 1948 and 1951.

In today’s environment, he added, the impacts of a volcanic eruption event last longer and use more resources.

The DOST director stated that after the plan is finished, it will be incorporated into the nation’s system for managing catastrophe risk reduction.

Operation Camiguin

The sole district representative for Camiguin, Jurdin Jesus Romualdo, also disclosed intentions on Wednesday to institutionalize the formation of “Task Force (TF) Camiguin,” which will be given several responsibilities for assisting communities.

While the province is free of any security threats, Romualdo stated in a speech that the TF can also act as a force multiplier for disaster risk reduction management.

The TF is expected to start taking shape by the third week of May this year, according to Romualdo.

“I told the Navy that we can have fast crafts to transport troops, and since it is suitable in our (island) landscape,” he declared.
