Urging motorists to “stop for children”

On Sunday, the Departments of Education (DepEd), Health (DOH), and a private organization that promotes road safety urged all Filipino drivers to share the road and stop for children.

ImagineLaw advised drivers in a news release to adhere to traffic laws, travel within the speed limit, and follow road safety regulations to prevent accidents that frequently result in the fatalities of children.

“Hindi pwedeng hari-harian sa kalsada,” declared Daphne Marcelo, the project manager for the team’s road safety initiative. “We must learn how to develop a society and a transportation network that safeguards vulnerable road users, particularly children.”

The organizations issued the call during the weekend’s “Pista ng Kalusugan” (Festival of Health), a free outdoor event held at Quezon Memorial Circle to promote the health and well-being of Filipinos.

Dr. Dex Galban, assistant secretary for education, and Rodley Carza, director of the DOH’s health promotion bureau, attended the call.

The Philippine Statistics Authority reported that at least 1,670 Filipino children die in traffic accidents per year.

A passing truck in Taguig City killed a 5-year-old their last month.

She said, “We must collaborate to develop a set of remedies to end this epidemic, including safer driving practices, better infrastructure for commuters, pedestrians, and drivers, and strict and reasonable enforcement of traffic laws.
