The Tacloban-Palo Diversion Road will be built with at least PHP400 million made aside by the national government to address traffic congestion and flooding along the city’s and the surrounding town’s borders.

The allocation this year would support the road building and drainage project inside a 345-meter segment in three sites in Campetic and Pawing villages in Palo town and this place’s San Jose district, according to Edgar Tabacon, director of Public Works and Highways Eastern Visayas region.

Due to the necessity of realignments, the entire 3.22-kilometer road stretch requires PHP3.5 billion, which is more than the PHP2.7 billion initially planned fund.

According to Tabacon, the Philippine News Agency is hopeful that the project will be finished in less than five years.

According to its amended design, the DPWH wants to construct a four-lane road that will pass through the village of Pawing and run from San Jose-Candahug Road in this city to Maharlika Highway in Campetic village in Palo.
The route is intended to reduce flooding in the area as well as traffic congestion on the Maharlika Highway.

To prevent encroachment and obstruction of streams, Tabacon stated, “The flood control and drainage system will be on the center of the road.”

Greater drainage will reduce floods in the Palo town communities of Candahug, Pawing, and Campetic; Caibaan, San Jose, Marasbaras, Manlurip; and here at Imelda Village and V&G Subdivision.

During the rainy and typhoon seasons, these places typically transform into swamps, and it would take weeks for floodwaters to recede.

It is anticipated that the Tacloban-Palo Diversion Road, which will also include bike lanes, walkways, service roads, solar lamps, and components for road safety devices, will transform the vacant, flood-prone lands into prestigious commercial zones.
