DFA: True PH-China ties won’t be defined by maritime disputes

Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo said following his Saturday meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Foreign Minister Qin Gang, at the Diamond Hotel Manila that differences over the South China Sea shouldn’t stop Beijing and Manila from trying to find solutions to the maritime disputes.

“Our leaders have agreed that our differences in the West Philippine Sea are not the sum (or) total of our relations,” Manalo stated.

“These differences shouldn’t stop us from looking for ways to manage them effectively, especially with respect to the enjoyment of rights of Filipinos, especially fisher folk whose livelihood and general well-being are undermined by incidents and actions in the West Philippine Sea,” the statement reads.

Qin is in Manila on an official visit that will last through April 23. He will meet with Manalo and pay a visit to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

In his speech, Manalo expressed the wish that the two nations’ meeting with the Chinese official would provide a chance for them to find methods to tackle problems that they both faced.

The Philippines has lodged many diplomatic protests against China over the latter’s actions in the former’s exclusive economic zone in the South China Sea since the beginning of the Marcos regime.

For his part, Qin emphasized the significance of cooperation in order to “properly resolve our differences in the spirit of credibility, consultation, and dialogue.”

Both parties also agreed to work hard to maintain the favorable trend in Philippine-China relations, particularly the advances made following Marcos’ state visit to Beijing in January.

“China is ready to work with the Philippines to truly implement the consensus between the Presidents of our two countries, keep to the direction of friendship between our two countries, and jointly uphold a larger picture of our bilateral relationship,” added Qin.

Manalo declared that in order to close the trade gap and further improve economic ties between the two countries, the DFA would collaborate closely with the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Additionally, he wanted to increase collaboration in the fields of tourism, energy, science, and technology as well as agricultural and infrastructure development.

“Our people-to-people ties will be further strengthened by the revival of tourism, resumed flights, and exchanges of students, teachers, and workers,” he stated.

The eight-point economic program of the Philippines will be supported by these, which will also help our Chinese allies and improve the lives of Filipinos.
