DBM to government agencies: Step up preparation for climate change

In light of Earth Day, the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) on Saturday urged other government organizations to step up their planning and programming for climate change.

In order to prepare the national budget in accordance with the Philippine Development Plan 2023–2028, stakeholders are required to identify environmental-related programs and projects.

The grave dangers that climate change poses are not simply a concern for the next generation; they also exist today and are definitely felt. Therefore, before it’s too late, we must take action to conserve our world and its natural resources, according to a statement from DBM Secretary Amenah Pangandaman.

Please keep in mind that we are taking these steps to make sure that our economic development is headed in a direction that is both truly inclusive and sustainable for everyone.

The DBM allotted PHP2.39 billion for the National Greening Program, which includes provisions for the Protected Areas Development and Management Program, Manila Bay Rehabilitation, and Coastal and Marine Ecosystems Management Program, in addition to boosting the 2023 budget to combat climate change.

As we commemorate Earth Day, Pangandaman urged his fellow Filipinos to accept their shared duty for protecting the environment.

Every year on April 22, Earth Day is commemorated to encourage society and decision-makers to confront the climate catastrophe.

The difficulty of limiting global warming to 1.5°C was addressed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in 2018.

This year, it emphasized that unsustainable energy use, land use and land-use change, lifestyles, and patterns of consumption and production “have continued to increase, with unequal historical and ongoing contributions arising from unsustainable energy use, land use and land-use change, lifestyles, and patterns of consumption and production across regions, between and within countries, and among individuals.”

Furthermore, it issued a warning that the current rate and scope of climate action are insufficient to stop climate change.
