The DSWD is prepared to help people who will be impacted by El Nino.

Rex Gatchalian, secretary of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), presided over a video conference meeting with representatives from the various field offices (FOs) on Tuesday to assess how well the regional directors and other concerned officials were prepared for the El Nino phenomena.

Gatchalian reassured the public that the agency has enough funding and ready-to-be-distributed food and non-food items (FNFIs) for people who would be directly impacted by the protracted dry spell of the approaching El Nino.

Gatchalian made sure during the online briefing that money and other supplies were strategically placed in all DSWD warehouses and were ready for fast distribution to any local government units (LGUs) in need.

All of the regional directors and officers present at the video conference, which was co-chaired by Assistant Secretary for the Disaster Response Management Group (DRMG), Diana Rose S. Cajipe, confirmed that their respective FOs are on alert and have enough funds on hand for standby as well as a supply of food boxes for the anticipated effects of the drought.

In addition, Social Welfare and Development (SWAD) Teams from various regions are constantly cooperating with the LGUs to figure out how to help individuals who may be impacted by El Nino, particularly farmers, and farmworkers.

The National Resource Operations Center, the FOs, and the DSWD Central Office currently have stockpiles and standby cash totaling more than PHP1.35 billion.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) predicts that an El Nino may form in the months of July, August, and September and last as long as 2024.

In compliance with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s order to ensure that no more Filipino families go hungry, Gatchalian has directed all field offices to continue monitoring the situation in their respective districts so that a prompt response can be given.
