Organizations to work together to assist Mindoro oil spill displaced employees

The loss of livelihood brought on by the recent capsizing of the MT Princess Empress, which spilled a sizable amount of industrial fuel in the waters of the province’s coastal communities, is being swiftly addressed by a number of government bodies pooling their resources.

The first step towards a significant “training cum production” endeavor, according to Labor Undersecretary Ciriaco Lagunzad Jr., was the signing of a memorandum of agreement (MOA) by the various agencies.

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), the Department of Tourism (DOT), and the provincial administration of Oriental Mindoro are among the government entities involved.

The MOA was signed on Monday in Calapan City by the Labor Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma, the Undersecretary for Tourism Shereen Gail Yu-Pamintuan, the Director General of TESDA Danilo Cruz, and the Governor Humerlito Dolor.

“We (the government) must make this step right away in light of the estimated 27,000 people whose livelihoods have been unexpectedly lost due to the oil disaster. The environmental problem prompted several profitable enterprises to shut down in addition to forcing the displacement of Mindoro’s fishermen, according to Lagunzad.

According to him, the multi-agency approach starts with teaching new skills to displaced workers so they may work on other income-generating projects while their communities recover from the effects of the oil disaster.

He also said that trainees taking the 10 to 15-day skills training courses would receive compensation that was on par with the minimum wage.

According to Lagunzad, the trainees will also receive financial assistance to get started on new career prospects after they graduate.
