Bacolod is asked to intensify measles and polio outbreak prevention.

The local administration here has been encouraged by the Department of Health-Western Visayas (DOH-6) to intensify efforts to avoid measles-rubella and polio outbreaks after observing a poor immunization rate among infants under the age of one in the previous year.

The call was made on Friday at the regional launch of the Measles-Rubella (MR) and bivalent Oral Polio Vaccine (bOPV) Supplemental Immunization Activity (SIA) at the grounds of the Bacolod Government Center. DOH-6 Regional Director Adriano Suba-an made the announcement.

The “Chikiting Ligtas Sa Dagdag Bakuna Kontra Polio, Rubella at Tigdas” campaign, which runs from May 1 to May 31, aims to stop measles outbreaks and the ongoing rise of these diseases in the nation.

According to data, Suba-an said that Western Visayas’ achievement for fully immunized children (FIC) in 2022 was only 59.52 percent, well below the required 95 percent to create herd immunity.

“Kinakabahan po tayo dyan (It’s making us anxious)” There would be a high likelihood of an outbreak because our FIC is low (because we have a low FIC). That is the current danger in Bacolod City, he continued.

He pointed out that the FIC accomplishment in this city is merely 42%.

The DOH-6 chief stated, “If there were to be a measles outbreak, it could occur here in Bacolod City.”

According to Suba-an, Bacolod City already had a case of German measles or rubella at the beginning of the year, and Iloilo City also had a case.

“These are the highly urbanized Western Visayas cities, with densely populated neighborhoods and homes that are very close to one another. Measles would spread quickly if there were a case, he noted.

The target population for MR doses in Bacolod is 50,081 children between the ages of 9 and 59 months, while the target population for bOPVs is 58,394.

Let’s avoid having an outbreak in Bacolod City. The virus is present already. That is why we must halt the transmission,” Suba-an said, stating that the DOH-6 is dedicated to providing logistical and technical support to the city government to stop the spread of these viral infections among youngsters.

Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez urged parents and guardians to support the SIA during May in a statement.

“Bring your children between 0 and 59 months. The shots are free, he continued.
