To help the province with its electricity problems, the Department of Energy (DOE) intends to deploy generator sets from Eastern Visayas to Occidental Mindoro.

The generator sets will help essential facilities on the island, particularly hospitals, according to DOE Undersecretary Felix William Fuentebella, who made the remarks during a news event on Saturday in Quezon City.

“What we target, and will push through with this, is to transfer gensets of 8 megawatts from Region 8 to Occidental Mindoro,” he said.

According to Fuentebella, Occidental Mindoro has a power demand of about 30 megawatts, yet a working power plant there can only produce 7 MW, resulting in regular brownouts.

The National Electrification Administration (NEA) and the Occidental Mindoro Consolidated Power Corporation (OMCPC) have agreed to operate the three OMCPC power plants to help the province deal with its power issue, according to Malacanang.

According to Malacanang, power plants with capacities of 5 MW in the Sablayan region and 7 MW in Mamburao, Paluan, Sta. Cruz, Abra de Ilog (MAPSA), 20 MW in San Jose, Magsaysay, Rizal, and Calitaan (SAMARICA), and 7 MW in Mamburao, Paluan, and Sta.

The same electricity problems that Oriental Mindoro is experiencing, according to Fuentebella, are also being addressed by the federal government.

He said that we intend to move quickly because the entire island ought to be wired into the grid now.

It will move quickly, and I believe the target date is 2026… He said that we need to ensure that we are offering quality electrical services at the correct costs, and connectivity is one of the solutions. If you look at the size of Mindoro, it has a big potential to boost the economy.

According to him, interested parties also consider how Occidental and Oriental Mindoro might organize a joint competitive hiring procedure.
