Laguna Lake floating solar projects will receive 610 MW from DOE.
The Department of Energy (DOE) approved six massive floating solar projects with a combined capacity of 610.5 megawatts (MW) on Wednesday.
The Solar Energy Operating Contracts (SOEC) for SunAsia Energy, Inc. and its partner Blueleaf Energy’s floating solar projects, which will be put on the water’s surface of Laguna Lake, were awarded, according to a DOE release.
The facilities will be spread among the towns of Bay and Victoria as well as the cities of Calamba, Sta. Rosa, and Cabuyao.
“The awarding of these contracts accelerates the implementation of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s thrust to develop indigenous and renewable energy sources,” said DOE Secretary Raphael Lotilla.
Lotilla, Tetchi Capellan, president and CEO of SunAsia Energy, Raghuram Natarajan, president and CEO of Blueleaf Energy, Hae Kyong Yu, and Gerard Ho Wei Wong, ambassadors of Singapore and Australia, were all present when the SOEC was given out.
According to the DOE, Blueleaf’s projects in this country are a result of Marcos’s official trip to Singapore in September of last year, during which the business signed a statement of intent with the Philippine government to strengthen its commitment to sustainable infrastructure in the nation.
In the Philippines, Blueleaf has solar installations totaling 250 MW. Since 2013, the nation has seen the construction of solar installations by its regional partner Solar Energy.
The commercialization of floating solar as an emerging technology, in particular, signifies “an additional strategic investment and a firm commitment to strengthen the country’s renewable energy sector,” according to Lotilla.
The DOE reports that the organization has awarded 237 solar energy contracts in total. These contracts can potentially produce up to 21,452 MW of clean energy, with an installed capacity totaling 1,282 MW.
