In order to help the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste become a full member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Indonesia is prepared to do so.

Timor-Leste still required to go through many phases to become a full member of ASEAN, according to Sidharto Suryodipuro, director of ASEAN Cooperation at the Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry (MFA), who spoke at a press conference in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara, on Monday.

According to Suryodipuro, the stages involve a number of agreements or treaties that fall under the categories of politics, security, economics, and socio-culture.

But he added that Indonesia was prepared to help Timor-Leste finish all the steps by asking its state officials to study there.

He stated, “This year, Indonesia plans to assist Timor-Leste by inviting 30 state representatives to participate in various ministries in Indonesia, which will host meetings regarding its chairmanship (of ASEAN).”

He went on to say that the 30 state officials from Timor-Leste, including those from the MFA, would participate in internship programs at the MFA and other ministries in Indonesia.

He added, “We expect that this support will ease their efforts and aid them in better understanding the different commitments inherent in (ASEAN) agreements.

Timor-Leste would become the bloc’s eleventh member, as the leaders of Southeast Asia had previously agreed in principle in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, in November of last year.

As time went on, representatives from Timor-Leste were invited to watch a number of ASEAN gatherings, including the retreat of the ASEAN foreign ministers in February of this year.

In addition, the ASEAN foreign ministers established a special working group within the ASEAN Coordinating Council (ACC) to develop a roadmap for Timor-Leste’s full membership.

The full membership of Timor-Leste will be one of the subjects covered at the 42nd ASEAN Summit.

Various gatherings, including the summit, are anticipated to boost ASEAN’s capability and generate a number of documents, including the Chair Statement and ASEAN Post-2025 Vision.
