Joint crop research to be conducted by PhilSA and DA
The Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) will collaborate on research on crops, particularly maize and onions.
The two will use satellite data to map and track these crops, the PhilSA said on Thursday, adding that farm-to-market roads will also be watched.
Both organizations want to examine the maize and onion growing in Nueva Ecija and the provinces of Pampanga and Isabela, respectively. The study of the location and use of farm-to-market highways in Pampanga and Nueva Ecija is a component of their collaborative research.
The extensive area of maize and onion fields led to the selection of the pilot sites in Region III.
According to PhilSa, the project will concentrate on these crops to create their geodatabases.
“Geolocation will make it possible to analyze crops more thoroughly and broadly by combining it with other Earth observation data. According to Arlo Jayson Sabuito, Science Research Specialist II for the PhilSA Space Data Mobilization and Applications Division, “this will at the very least provide delineation and area statistics of these crops.”
Sabuito continued, “More in-depth research can yield data like cropping calendars, yield estimation, and damage assessments due to disasters like drought and typhoons.”
The cooperative research will begin this year, according to PhilSA.
According to the report, the findings could assist the government, non-governmental groups, and farmers in making decisions that will secure the nation’s food production.
