In Laoag, the palace declared June 19 a non-working holiday.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has proclaimed June 19 a special non-working holiday in this city ahead of its 58th Charter Day anniversary next month.
Executive Secretary Lucas P. Bersamin stated in Proclamation 219 that “it is but fitting and proper that the people of the City of Laoag be given full opportunity to celebrate and participate in the occasion with appropriate ceremonies.”
By Republic Act 4584, adopted in a plebiscite, Laoag was incorporated as a city in 1965.
The local government has started a video competition to celebrate by highlighting the city’s top tourist attractions.
The video contest, with the topic “Shine Laoag: Embracing Tourism Diversity,” is accessible to all Laoag residents and visitors who are 18 years of age or older.
According to the contest rules, each participant is only allowed to submit one entry which is a 4-minute long film.
The top three entries in each of the two categories—Laoag residents and non-residents—will each get PHP30,000, PHP20,000, and PHP10,000 in cash prizes, with PHP3,000 going to the entries that received the most likes and shares on the City Tourism Office Facebook page.
The third Marunggay Festival, which honors the Moringa Oleifera (also known as malunggay), a well-known Ilokano garden tree that is being marketed as a “superfood” for the Ilocanos, will also be part of this year’s Charter Day celebration.
To make Laoag shine the brightest under his leadership, Mayor Michael Keon said the city government’s 58th Charter Day celebration will be exceptionally spectacular.
Earlier this year, the city administration allocated an initial PHP19 million to illuminate the village streets with solar-powered lamp posts.
In a media interview on Tuesday, Keon remarked, “We need more lighting in the city to live up to the name ‘Laoag’ (which means light).
The initial stage of the solar lighting project has already started in the city center and will eventually reach the furthest barangays.
