The agriculture office in Zambo is preparing for El Nino.

The city’s agriculturalist office has prepared mitigation strategies for the agricultural and fishing industries against the El Nio phenomena brought on by the drought.

This occurred when the local government was urged by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration-Zamboanga office to prepare for the anticipated dry spell that may begin in July.

The city’s agriculturist, Carmencita Sanchez, said they have begun holding meetings, agricultural lessons, and information drives to help farmers comprehend the effects of the weather event.

Whether or not the El Nino event occurs, she stated, “We are preparing for it.”

She noted that other mitigating methods include water rationing in irrigation canals, education about crop insurance and credit policies, planting dates, and crop selections such as drought-resistant plants.

Rainfalls are also being tracked, and inventories are being done on the rice supplies.

Sanchez said water levels in the Curuan and Mercedes rivers here had reached the “critical” and “highly critical” stages, respectively, according to the monitoring of rivers.

Boalan, Guiwan, Pasonanca, Quiniput, Bunguiao, Ayala, and Talisayan, among other rivers, all have normal water levels.

The water supply is still adequate, so I’m not concerned about the agri-fishery sector, she added.

She stated that thus far, there have been no reports of crop damage due to excessive heat from their sub-field offices.
