Relief supplies and emergency shelter kits are prepared in case of a typhoon.

In preparation for Typhoon Betty (Mawar), the local social welfare office has set aside food and non-food relief supplies and temporary shelter kits.

In case the super typhoon hits the island settlements in this area, 1,500 food packs, 400 non-food kits, 50 sets of modular tents, and 50 rolls of laminated tarpaulins have been prepared, according to Junard Abalos, the city’s social welfare officer.

According to Abalos, the city has prepared 1,000 non-food and 1,500 food kits for the mainland population.

The Lapu-Lapu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (LCDRRMO) has also prepared food and non-food supplies and these relief and shelter kits.

Abalos sent a message to reporters stating, “We also have standby stocks for delivery by supplier just in case ang atong giandam (what we prepared will run out).”

The city claimed in a statement that the LCDRRMO, in addition to the relief food boxes already in store, also transported 700 relief food boxes to Caubian Island as part of the preparation.

The farthest island barangay in Lapu-Lapu is Caubian Island.

The city administration is on red alert to ensure all supplies and logistics are ready.

According to a statement from Lapu-Lapu City Rescue, Super Typhoon “Mawar” is anticipated to intensify in a west-northwesterly trajectory over the following 12 hours before turning westward. “So far, Lapu-Lapu City Rescue has reported no untoward incidents related to the forecasted track,” the statement added.

Additionally, Mayor Junard Chan has instructed the LCDRRMO to keep an eye on Olango Island in particular and all coastal and island barangays for any potential consequences once the typhoon lands.

In anticipation of the typhoon, the Lapu-Lapu City Police, Philippine Coast Guard, and Lapu-Lapu City Rescue emergency preparedness response team in Olango have already been activated.

On Saturday, Typhoon Betty is expected to land in the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR). Near the center, it features winds that may sustain a maximum speed of 185 kilometers per hour (kph), with gusts as high as 230 kph.
