CBCP applauds the contribution of OFWs to the growth of the Philippine economy.

The International Day of Family Remittance will soon be observed, and Stella Maris Philippines and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) recognized migrant workers and sailors in solidarity.

Bishop Ruperto Santos, deputy head of the CBCP-Episcopal Commission on Migrants and Itinerant People, praised the work of those in the sector for their economic contribution beyond maintaining their families.

“This International Day of Family Remittance is a very praiseworthy celebration and grateful recognition of immense, valuable, and essential contributions of migrant workers and seafarers all over the world,” he wrote in a message delivered on Tuesday to the station managed by the church, Radio Veritas.

The 200 million migrant workers who send money to their homes have improved the lives of their more than 800 million family members, according to Santos, who is also the departing bishop of Balanga, Bataan.

Santos, who is also the Bishop Promoter of Stella Maris Philippines, invited other priests to celebrate the International Day of Family Remittance by celebrating mass for migrant seafarers and laborers in order to improve their welfare and that of their families.

June 16 is recognized as the International Day of Family Remittances.

Santos added, “Let us demonstrate our gratitude and respect to migrant workers and sailors by supporting their rights, upholding their dignity, and safeguarding them against injustices and exploitation.

169 million of the more than 200 million migrants in 2019 are migrant workers, according to data from the United Nations (UN) and International Labour Organisation (ILO).

The UN also noted that in 2022, remittances sent by migrants to their families back home totaled USD 630 billion.

There were 1.8 million overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in 2022, according to data from the Department of Migrant Workers and the Philippine Statistics Authority.

Total remittances from overseas workers were $36.1 billion that year.

The Philippines’ major source of income has always been remittances from Filipinos living abroad.
