The government plans to give cash assistance to Mayon evacuees in Albay.
According to Social Welfare Secretary Rex Gatchalian on Tuesday, the administration is considering providing financial relief to thousands of families who have been impacted by the prolonged unrest at Mayon Volcano.
In a press conference at the palace, Gatchalian stated that the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is working with the local governments in Albay province on President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s direction to possibly distribute cash aid to families who have been forced to flee because of Mayon’s volcanic activity.
Gatchalian admitted that, given the dangers posed by a potentially dangerous eruption of the Mayon Volcano, food packs would not be sufficient to meet the needs of those who were compelled to abandon their homes.
On the President’s direction, “We are talking to the local government about the possibility of distributing financial assistance,” Gatchalian added. “Nag-uusap na rin kami ng (We are talking to the) local government.”
Gatchalian claimed that he is in daily contact with the afflicted LGUs, the impacted LGU governor, and the provincial parliamentarians to determine how much money will be distributed to each household.
“We all know that the local government entities are in charge of running the evacuation centers. Alam naman natin ang pagpapatakbo ng (We all know that. However, the DSWD will provide them with the required logistical support at the President’s request, according to Gatchalian.
According to DSWD data, as of June 12, approximately 9,338 families or 36,814 people from 26 communities in Albay have been impacted by the eruption of Mayon Volcano.
Family food packs would be sent to the evacuees for the ensuing 45 days, according to Gatchalian.
Additionally, Gatchalian noted that the Office of Civil Defence had dispatched filtration units to Albay in order to solve the province’s lack of potable water.
In order to make sure that the impacted families are receiving the appropriate support from the government, he made sure that Marcos is “carefully and constantly” monitoring the situation and developments in Albay province.
“The President is keeping a close eye on the situation. Since last week, he and I have been in regular contact, either daily or hourly, concerning his instructions to ensure that every evacuee has access to food, as he put it.
The Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) team of the Department of Health (DOH), according to Ted Herbosa, who also participated in the news conference, has been sent to packed evacuation locations.
“I’m going to send another team to alternate with the waves to augment more personnel,” said the first team. As a result, we must despatch more health teams to the region and, according to the akin, mga 90 days pa daw. So it appears that this action will take a while to complete,” he remarked.
On June 8, Mayon’s unrest began to worsen, causing the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology to raise its Alert Level to 3.
Additionally, a disaster was declared for the entirety of the province of Albay.
