Products made from moringa dominate the Laoag festival.
The local government launched the Marunggay Festival on Tuesday to display a variety of food items made from malunggay (moringa oleifera), even though more items made from the “superfood” are being developed to take full advantage of its culinary and traditional medicinal benefits.
With new malunggay items ready for commercialization, the Marunggay Festival featuring a dulang cuisine fair at the Laoag City Multi-Purpose Centre, which has been running for three years, has continued to draw crowds.
Among them were sushi rolls, cookies, miki, polvoron, creamy malunggay pesto, fresh lumpia in malunggay crepe, malunggay pizza, and malunggay ice cream.
“What we’ve imagined is now becoming a reality. As a result, according to municipal councilor Handy Lao, who spearheaded the festival’s passage, we continually develop byproducts to assist the Department of Health’s efforts in preventing malnutrition and upholding the health of Laoageos.
Lao claims that negotiations are already taking place with a Japanese company that creates products using moringa, which the city plans to use as raw materials.
Moringa leaves and seed oil are the main raw resources for the food and nutrition sector, cosmetics, and herbal medicine in other nations.
While the leaf powder capsule is mostly used as a dietary supplement and herbal medicine, the leaf powder is primarily utilized for food fortification as an ingredient in bread, noodles, juices, milk, and tea.
A malunggay cooking contest featuring the winning dishes as additional “must-try” Laoag offerings was another festival highlight.
The city government is urging the residents to plant and cultivate additional malunggay trees to ensure a consistent supply of high-quality fresh and dry moringa raw materials on the international market, in addition to for local consumption.
To support a consistent market, local leaders and residents have taken the initiative to cultivate this superfood plant in school gardens, backyards, roadsides, and vacant lots.
