Participants of the WHO’s Healthy Hearts Programme are historic towns
The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Department of Health Western Visayas Centre for Health Development (DOH WV CHD) have selected nine communities in the province of Antique as the initial beneficiaries of the enlarged Healthy Hearts Programme (HHP).
After the program’s launch on Tuesday at the former provincial capitol in the country’s capital, Dr. Rui Paulo de Jesus, WHO’s country representative for the Philippines, addressed the media. “The Healthy Hearts program objectives include early detection and to ensure continuity of the treatment of hypertension,” he said.
He said that following the program’s successful trial deployment in the province of Iloilo’s first district in 2018, Antique was chosen for the program’s expansion.
The program will be introduced in Pandan, Culasi, and Tibiao in the north; Barbaza, Bugasong, and Patnongon in the center; and Sibalom, Hamtic, and Tobias Fornier in the province’s southern region, according to Antique Integrated Provincial Health Officer 1 Dr. Leoncio Abiera Jr.
Starter kits, blood pressure monitors, and training on managing non-communicable diseases (NCD), particularly hypertension, would be available to these municipalities.
At the program’s inception, the mayors of the nine municipalities joined Antique Governor Rhodora Cadiao in signing a pledge of support.
According to Abiera, in 2022, NCD will be the third leading cause of morbidity and the fourth main cause of death in the province.
For Barangay Health Workers (BHWs), who will support the IPHO and Municipal Health Officers (MHOs) in the program implementation, the regional health office has already held training trainers for barangay health workers (BHWs) since last year.
In the press briefing, DOH WV CHD Assistant Regional Director Ma. Sophia Pulmones stated that 24,267 hypertensive patients are registered in the province of Iloilo through their electronic registry.
80 percent, or 17,681 of the 24,267 hypertension patients, currently have their blood pressure under control, according to Pulmones.
According to a DOH representative, individuals who consistently take their medications due to the program have regulated blood pressure.
Controlled hypertension lowers mortality and helps to avoid comorbidities like diabetes.
