PCSO asks people to participate in a special campaign against malnutrition.

Chairman of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office Junie E. Cua asked the public on Monday to help raise more funds to fight malnutrition in the nation as the nation observes Nutrition Month in July.

Cua noted that the PCSO conducts a yearly sweepstake draw to fund feeding programs.

The PCSO must host annual special sweepstakes to benefit the Nutrition Foundation of the Philippines (NFP) by Republic Act 4621, passed in June 1965.

According to the law, after paying for prizes and other costs, the entire proceeds from special sweepstakes horse races must be given to the NFP “for the support of its projects and programs in nutrition and the maintenance of its technical and administrative staffs, including salaries, wages, traveling expenses, per diems, equipment, materials, supplies and all others that are essential to the needs of its services.”

The NFP was established on December 28, 1959, and it started conducting community nutrition activities on July 15, 1960, becoming the first private, non-stock, non-profit organization to do so.

“Our countrymen can greatly help in raising the amount that we contribute in the fight against malnutrition,” Cua said, highlighting the need for the nation to take the issue of malnutrition seriously. “Malaki ang maitutulong ng mga kababayan natin sa pagpapalaki ng maaari nating iambag sa laban kontra malnutrisyon sa bansa.”

The United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) reports that every day, 95 Filipino children die from malnutrition, and 27 out of every 1,000 Filipino children do not live to see their fifth birthday.

Undernutrition has persisted in the nation for close to 30 years, according to the World Bank. Additionally, it stated that stunting affects one in three Filipino children under five.

“We hope to be able to support the Marcos administration’s efforts to address malnutrition in some tiny way. Inaanyayahan natin ang ating mga kababayan na lumahok sa special sweepstakes for nutrition para kayo’y makatulong rin (We are encouraging our countrymen to participate in the special sweepstakes for nutrition for you to also contribute in the effort),” Cua said.

He said the organization would inform the public about the special draw through its communication channels, including social media.

To raise Filipinos’ knowledge of the value of nutrition, President Decree 491 declaring July as Nutrition Month was signed in 1974.
