The government promises to step up efforts to diversify energy sources.

The government is stepping up efforts to diversify the nation’s energy sources, according to a statement from the Department of Energy (DOE) on Friday.

Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla stated this during the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Business Advisory Council (ABAC) virtual roundtable discussion on Powering the Future: Exploring Nuclear and Emission-Free Energy. “On the part of the Philippines, our Department of Energy is committed to working towards a sustainable future through a technology approach to clean alternative energy sources to provide greater energy security, stability, reliability, and affordability for the country,”

He claimed that including nuclear power in the diversification of energy sources.

Given its technological and financial feasibility, nuclear energy is a long-term fuel choice for power generation, and we continue to be resolute in adopting a calculated and scientific approach. To meet the competency standards based on the milestone method of the International Atomic Energy Agency, we continue to implement plans and programs, Lotilla stated.

Recall that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. had stressed the need to reevaluate the Philippines’ approach to nuclear power projects.

The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) and DOE are jointly collaborating on the enabling policy framework for private sector involvement in the nuclear energy sector.

The organization also previously announced that the Nuclear Energy Programme Inter-Agency Committee (NEP-IAC) examines whether nuclear power may be used as a substitute energy source to meet the nation’s needs.

According to Lotilla, the legislative and regulatory framework is also being worked on by Congress.

According to the Philippine Energy Plan 2020โ€“2040, “For emerging technologies, we are also actively considering Hydrogen and its derivates as promising and cleaner alternative energy carriers for the country,” he stated.

The DOE is also creating a framework and guidelines for hydrogen use in the energy industry.

In addition to this, Lotilla noted that co-firing ammonia with existing coal-fired power plants continues to be of interest.

To create a fuel cell research, development, and testing facility, the DOE has partnered with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

Rest assured that the Philippine Department of Energy will participate in and launch the Nuclear Energy and Emerging Technologies Programme towards further enrichment in terms of the technical capacities and capabilities that form part of the programs, he said, in light of all of these significant undertakings.

“For nuclear, the deliverables of all the efforts shall form part of the finalization of our road map for completion this year,” added Lotilla.
