π NSCR to Revive PH Rail Industry β DOTr Chief ππͺ
Department of Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista announced Monday that the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) system would be crucial in revitalizing the country’s rail sector.
Breaking ground for the PHP73.25 billion South Commuter Railway project, specifically the Alabang-Calamba segment, the massive 147-kilometer NSCR is set to transform lives and create a game-changing rail system, according to Bautista.
With determination and a commitment to meeting project deadlines, Bautista stated that the rail infrastructure would pave the way for a renaissance in the Philippine railway industry.
The NSCR, a collaboration between the Philippines, the Japan International Cooperation Agency, and the Asian Development Bank, aims to connect Clark, Pampanga in the north to Calamba, Laguna in the south, significantly reducing travel time from Metro Manila to neighboring provinces. The goal is to decrease the current travel time of 4-4.5 hours to less than two hours, benefiting around 600,000 passengers daily upon full operation.
Bautista highlighted that residents and communities eagerly anticipate a comfortable, affordable, safe, and efficient commute, which starkly contrasts the increasingly congested road traffic in and around Metro Manila.
To achieve this vision, an elevated, double-track, and electrified train system will be constructed along the existing route of the Philippine National Railways (PNR) from Alabang to Calamba. As a result, the PNR has temporarily suspended operations on the Alabang-Calamba segment to expedite the construction of the three contract packages.
Additionally, the existing tracks from Alabang to Calamba will be relocated and repurposed for the proposed 565-kilometer-long South Long-Haul project, extending to the Bicol region.
The three civil contract packages encompass the construction of railway viaduct structures and elevated stations in various locations, including Alabang, Muntinlupa City, San Pedro, Pacita, BiΓ±an, Santa Rosa, Cabuyao, Banlic, and Calamba in Laguna.
Supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency and the Asian Development Bank, this transformative project will ultimately feature 35 stations and operate with 51 commuter train sets and seven express train sets. π€π
