🌾🍎 Affordable Healthy Diet for Eastern Visayas💪🍽️
The National Nutrition Council (NNC) office in Eastern Visayas is intensifying its campaign for an affordable healthy diet by leveraging existing food security programs implemented by national government agencies. According to the NNC, a “family of five” would need PHP 1,200 per day to purchase a nutritious meal.
“We understand that it is very challenging for a family with an average income to afford healthy food given the current food prices, but there are plant-based food options available in our communities. We just need to educate people on how to prepare them,” shared Catalino Dotollo, the regional nutrition program coordinator of NNC.
Citing data from the Philippine Statistics Authority, the NNC official revealed that a daily healthy diet costs around P242.53 per Filipino in 2021.
“To provide a healthy diet for a family of five, you would need to spend approximately PHP 1,200 daily, which exceeds the minimum daily wage. The Nutrition Month campaign calls for relevant stakeholders to transform the food system and address its key internal drivers to ensure the affordability of nutritious foods as part of a healthy diet,” he added.
The Department of Science and Technology in Leyte, through its provincial director John Glenn Ocaña, mentioned that they have been promoting locally produced materials for food processing to address high food prices. They also focus on improving processing efficiency to make food products more affordable.
Ma. Luisa Capili, the head of the Department of Agriculture’s regional institutional development unit, stated that they have been supporting local communities in cultivating vegetables to meet local demand.
“We are enhancing the capacities of villages to engage in sustainable agricultural initiatives through the intensification and fostering of activities such as community gardening,” Capili added.
This year’s Nutrition Month theme, “Healthy diet gawing affordable for all!” (Making healthy diet affordable for all), aims to promote food and nutrition security, particularly affordability, and ensure everyone’s right to have access to safe and nutritious food while being free from hunger.
The Nutrition Month campaign seeks to raise awareness and support efforts to improve access to affordable healthy diets, reduce malnutrition, and enhance food security, health, and overall quality of life for Filipinos.
Specifically, the campaign aims to engage consumers in promoting better diet quality and sustainable healthy diets, involve stakeholders at various levels in taking action to enable access to affordable and sustainable healthy diets, and garner support for the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition 2023-2028 as the framework for enhancing nutrition security. 🥦🛒🌾
