According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the James Webb Space Telescope has identified the oldest known supermassive black hole located at the center of the CEERS 1019 galaxy. This black hole took shape a mere 570 million years after the Big Bang and possesses a mass approximately 9 million times that of the sun.

A statement on NASA’s website revealed that researchers have made this groundbreaking discovery using the James Webb Space Telescope, which has successfully detected the most distant active supermassive black hole to date. CEERS 1019 galaxy emerged just over 570 million years after the Big Bang, and its black hole is smaller in mass compared to other black holes identified in the early universe.

NASA also shared that two additional black holes, also relatively small in size, were uncovered, existing 1 and 1.1 billion years after the Big Bang. The James Webb telescope further identified 11 galaxies that existed during the universe’s early stages, approximately 470 to 675 million years old.

The black hole discovered in CEERS 1019, known to be the oldest, has a mass of around 9 million solar masses, significantly smaller than other black holes detected in the early universe through other telescopes. Those colossal black holes typically exceed 1 billion times the sun’s mass and are more easily detectable due to their greater brightness.

By combining infrared images and spectrum data obtained by the James Webb Space Telescope, researchers can map the early universe as part of the CEERS research. This groundbreaking discovery pushed back the formation of black holes before this finding, indicating that they formed approximately 1 billion years after the Big Bang.
