DepEd proposes making blended learning more formal.
In a meeting on Tuesday, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. received a proposal from the Department of Education (DepEd) to make blended learning a standard method of instruction nationwide.
At a news conference in Malacaang, DepEd spokesperson Michael Poa claimed that the department has identified blended learning as one of the answers to the shortages of teachers and classroom space.
“It’s not that quick, or it can’t be done overnight,” Poa said, explaining why these issues are still present in today’s society.
In addition to the conventional measures of expanding classrooms and recruiting more teachers, he continued, “That’s why we also presented that we are now going on a two-track approach wherein we also want to tap into technology.”
To ensure this idea’s efficacy and efficiency, Poa claimed that more research is necessary.
We don’t want to quickly deploy blended learning because it would lower the standard of instruction; therefore ayaw naman nating basta-basta mag-blended learning tayo. Because of this, before we implement it, we really want to make sure we look at best practices, even in the private sector, to see how blended learning is being implemented so we can be sure that once we implement it, we won’t affect the quality of education, the speaker said.
Poa stated that DepEd is collaborating with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) via the Teachers Education Council (TEC) to raise the standard of instruction in the nation.
The TEC must establish fundamental standards for teacher education programs and guarantee the coherence of teacher education and training from pre-service to in-service under Republic Act 11713, also known as the Excellence in Teacher Education Act, which was signed into law last year.
The law, also emphasized in the Philippine Development Plan 2023–2028 of the Marcos administration, revamps the TEC by improving collaboration between the DepEd, CHED, and Professional Regulation Commission.
