The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) will gather the National El Niño Team on July 19 to coordinate efforts to address the weather phenomenon’s impacts. The team aims to finalize the National Action Plan for El Niño and counter the effects of dry spells and drought in the country.

Representatives from various government agencies responsible for mitigating the impact of El Niño will attend the meeting at the OCD headquarters in Quezon City.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), El Niño has started in the country and is expected to last until the first quarter of 2024. This year, the phenomenon will intensify to a “moderate to severe” degree.

Undersecretary Ariel Nepomuceno, the administrator of OCD, will preside over the meeting. The team will discuss short-term, medium-term, and long-term plans to address the effects of El Niño on various sectors such as food security, water security, energy security, health, public safety, and cross-cutting issues.

PAGASA will provide an updated climate forecast and share the status of dams across the country.

The National El Niño Team regularly meets to review the actions taken by agencies in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s science-based, whole-of-nation strategy to prepare for the adverse effects of El Niño.
