PH Fleet Deploys 2 Brand-New Missile Boats to Visayas, Mindanao 🚢

🚢 MANILA – Strengthening its naval presence in the waters of Visayas and Mindanao, the Philippine Fleet (PF) sent off two newly commissioned fast attack interdiction platforms (FAICs) on Thursday.

In a statement, PF spokesperson Lt. Giovanni Badidles announced that the BRP Gener Tinangag (PG-903) and BRP Domingo Deluana (PG-905) were officially deployed from the Naval Shipyard, Naval Station Pascual Ledesma in Fort San Felipe, Cavite City on Wednesday.

“These two new patrol gunboats are en route to support the operations of the AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines) Unified Commands in Visayas and Western Mindanao,” he added.

The FAICs, also known as Acero-class patrol gunboats, are based on Israel’s Shaldag Mark V missile boats and were delivered to the Philippines on April 11. Their commissioning took place on May 26.

Named after two Philippine Marine Corps awardees of the Medal of Valor, like the first two missile boats commissioned in November 2022, these FAICs, namely BRP Nestor Acero (PG-901) and BRP Lolinato To-Ong, will play a crucial role in bolstering the Navy’s capabilities.

Littoral Combat Force commander, Commodore Carlo Lagasca, expressed confidence in the readiness of these assets following a successful operational readiness evaluation. He commended the personnel of PG-903 and PG-905 for their courage and readiness to confront terrorism, insurgency, traditional threats, and maritime law violators.

These brand-new assets will significantly enhance the Navy’s maritime patrol, internal security, and logistics support operations, fulfilling the Fleet’s mission to support the Unified Commands in their respective areas of responsibility across the Philippine archipelago.

Out of the nine-ship order with Israel Shipyards Limited, four FAIC-Ms will be armed with non-line-of-sight (NLOS) missiles boasting pinpoint accuracy and a 25-kilometer range. The remaining five will have typhoon-mounted 30mm main cannons and .50-caliber heavy machine guns.

Former President Rodrigo Duterte approved the acquisition of these FAIC-Ms in 2019 under the Horizon 2 List of the AFP Modernization Program. The PHP10 billion project was awarded on January 5, 2021, and the FAIC-Ms are set to replace PN’s medium-sized patrol craft. These vessels will be able to interdict surface threats and safely launch NLOS missiles using the surrounding littoral areas as maneuver space and cover.

Moreover, PN chief Vice Adm. Toribio Adaci Jr. announced plans to acquire at least 15 more Israel-made Shaldag Mark V missile boats to meet the Navy’s requirements in effectively patrolling the country’s seas. 🌊🇵🇭💪
