DAVAO CITY – The Department of Health in Davao Region (DOH-11) reported 10,363 tuberculosis (TB) cases in Region 11 from January to June this year, according to Dr. Annabelle Yumang, DOH-11 director.

During a press briefing, Dr. Yumang attributed the discovery of the cases to the agency’s intensified case findings through mobile chest X-rays in the region’s urban and rural areas.

Among the cases, 4,315 were recorded in Davao City, followed by Davao del Norte with 2,209, Davao de Oro (1,359), Davao del Sur (1,274), Davao Oriental (889), and Davao Occidental (344).

Dr. Yumang noted that TB cases have increased in the region for the past two years, with 10,636 recorded in 2021 and 16,147 in 2022.

However, she emphasized that the situation is “not alarming” as the health sector has been providing free medicines to patients.

TB, a lung infection caused by bacteria, is spread through the air when infected individuals cough, sneeze, or spit.

Symptoms of active TB include coughing with sputum or blood, chest pains, weight loss, fever, and night sweats.

Dr. Yumang assured that TB is curable and preventable, and most people with TB can be cured if diagnosed and provided with appropriate medicines taken properly.
