DSWD Receives Backing from Management Association to Combat Hunger π₯π€
MANILA β The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has garnered support from the Management Association of the Philippines (MAP) for its concerted endeavors to eradicate involuntary hunger.
At the MAP Membership General Meeting held at the Shangri-La The Fort in Taguig City, DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian introduced the Food Stamp Program (FSP), the agency’s pivotal anti-hunger initiative, to the assembly of management experts.
Gatchalian asserted that the FSP’s overarching goal of curbing involuntary hunger resonates harmoniously with the mission of MAP. Comprising more than 1,100 member organizations nationwide, MAP is committed to charting a progressive trajectory for the Philippines through the advocacy of shared responsibility.
During his presentation, Gatchalian outlined the comprehensive framework of the FSP, encapsulating its fundamental attributes, target beneficiaries, stipulated conditions, and an intricately outlined implementation strategy to combat malnutrition and address child stunting within the country.
“We are shifting our approach from cash to food as currency,” Gatchalian emphasized.
He underscored that the FSP is not a simple distribution program but rather an initiative to augment the food resources available to one million households categorized as “food poor” by the Philippine Statistics Authority.
“We aim to end human suffering, to terminate hunger not in some distant future, but right now,” he emphatically stated.
Gatchalian emphasized the indispensability of a holistic “whole-of-nation approach” in attaining the envisioned outcomes of the FSP.
“In reforming our social welfare efforts, we are striving to ensure that each program we initiate is precisely targeted, contingent upon set conditions, quantifiable, reliant on a unified approach encompassing the entire nation, and technologically advanced,” he articulated.
He solicited the unwavering support of MAP’s officers and members in “alleviating human suffering through the elimination of hunger.”
“We are optimistic that we can collaboratively partner with MAP to combat involuntary hunger and child stunting effectively,” he added.
Expressing her views, MAP President Atty. Benedicta Du-Balabad emphasized the necessity for the DSWD, the Department of Health (DOH), allied agencies, and MAP to join forces “to reverse malnutrition and child stunting, thereby illuminating a brighter future for our children.”
As an expert in management, she highlighted that MAP is well-positioned to rally groups and private enterprises, harnessing their collective resources to mount concerted efforts to tackle malnutrition and child stunting.
Following a series of productive discussions between Gatchalian and representatives from MAP, the two entities are poised to formalize their collaboration by signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU).
The forthcoming MOU signifies MAP’s commitment to aiding the DSWD in streamlining and gauging the efficacy of their activities, collectively working towards determining the program’s impact.
Gatchalian pointed out that this collaborative endeavor aligns seamlessly with the DSWD’s overarching endeavor to foster an inclusive engagement of the entire nation and society in tackling pressing social issues.
Recent data from a 2023 second-quarter survey by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) revealed that at least 10.4 percent of Filipino households encountered involuntary hunger at least once in the preceding three months.
However, the SWS notably highlighted that this recent hunger rate has decreased compared to the 11.8 percent recorded in December 2022.
