All railways in Luzon have had their health and safety protocols tightened by the Department of Transportation (DOTr).

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) said in a statement released Tuesday evening that its Railways Sector has taken steps to protect both the riding public and its employees, including mandatory coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) testing of all workers on the Light Rail Transit Lines 1 and 2 (LRT-1 and LRT-2), Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3), and Philippine National Railways (PNR).

“All staff is required to take an antigen test, with those who test positive receiving a confirmatory RT-PCR (reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction) test,” the DOTr added.

It said that 99 out of 696 MRT-3 employees and 91 out of 354 PNR personnel tested positive during the first round of antigen tests on Monday.

“Those who tested positive for antigen will be subjected to a confirmatory RT-PCR test.” They, as well as their known direct connections, were placed on quarantine until they were re-tested and declared negative, according to the DOTr.

Testing for Covid-19 will continue “for the rest of the week until all workers have been tested,” according to the company.

Additionally, random antigen testing of willing and consenting travelers will begin.

“The DOTr Railways Sector is assuring the public that necessary steps, including coronavirus testing of all rail staff, are being done to ensure that Covid-19 does not spread in our trains, stations, and depots,” according to the DOTr.

After a rise in Covid-19 instances over the holiday season, the National Capital Region and the provinces of Bulacan, Cavite, and Rizal were previously placed under the more restrictive Alert Level 3.

After 5,434 new infections were recorded on Tuesday, the number of active Covid-19 cases rose to 29,809.
